Public Pools where Jacksonville residents can swim for free all summer long.

Guide to Public Pools in Jacksonville

When Florida summer temperatures hit full force, Jacksonville families start searching for one thing: water. And while beaches and splash pads often get the spotlight, many families don’t realize just how extensive Jacksonville’s public pool system actually is. Through JaxParks Aquatics, the City of Jacksonville operates more than 30 public swimming pools across the city during the summer season, giving families affordable ways to cool off, stay active, and access swim safety programs close to home.

From Oceanway to Mandarin, Baldwin to the Beaches, public pools are tucked inside neighborhood parks, community centers, and even local schools. Some are designed for open swim and family recreation, while others host swim lessons, lap swimming, summer camps, and water fitness programs.

Public Pools are Available Across the City

According to the City of Jacksonville, 30 community pools opened for the summer season over Memorial Day weekend, with another expected to open later this summer. Pools currently operate on seasonal schedules, typically shifting into full summer hours in early June.

Some facilities, like Cecil Aquatic Center on Jacksonville’s Westside, offer expanded programming including lap swim, swim lessons, and evening sessions. Cecil is one of the city’s best-known aquatic facilities and includes dedicated swim lesson programming throughout the summer.

One of the biggest advantages of Jacksonville’s public pool system is accessibility. While private swim clubs and neighborhood HOA pools can come with steep membership fees, city pools provide lower-cost recreational opportunities for families across the community.

Public Pools in Jax offer Valuable Programs

Public pools also play an important role in water safety education. JaxParks Aquatics offers affordable two-week swim lesson sessions for just $60 per student, helping make water safety accessible for more families throughout the community. Both of my daughters learned to swim through these sessions, and it’s one of the reasons I’ll always appreciate Jacksonville’s public pool system. For many families, these programs are more than just summer activities, they’re life-saving skills that help children build confidence and comfort in the water at an early age.

Families planning to visit should always check the JaxParks Aquatics website before heading out, as hours, maintenance closures, weather delays, and programming schedules can vary by location throughout the summer season. Some pools may also temporarily close due to lifeguard staffing needs or scheduled swim programs.

In a city known for its waterways and long summers, Jacksonville’s public pools quietly remain one of the best community resources families can take advantage of, offering affordable fun, swim education, and a place to cool off one cannonball at a time.

You can check for opening times, and find a complete list of local pools at the JaxParks Aquatics website.
